Which lens

Which lens do I need?

Location first, lens second. Find where you fish, then the lens that suits it.

FlatsContrast over cut. Seeing the fish before it sees you.
Recommended Brown Gold over brown
EstuaryStructure and colour change, not distance.
Recommended Brown Green over brown
ReefHard overhead light over clear water.
Recommended Blue over smoke Gold over brown

Every LXD lens is polarised. Category 3; photochromic Category 2–3.

the tech

Into the details

Cut for fishing, not a display case. Upper coverage handles low-sun angles; wrap construction shuts out the light that sneaks in at the sides.

  • Megol nose pads and temples

    Megol nose pads and temples

Anti-slip megol on the nose pads and the temples, the two points that carry the frame. It grips harder wet than dry, which is the opposite of how most frame materials behave.

  • TR-90 frame

    TR-90 frame

Hand-polished ultra-flex nylon with 100% memory. Salt, heat, spray and a hard knock against a gunwale. It comes back.

  • Removable side shields, on Baja and Caspian

Removable side shields, on Baja and Caspian

Clipped in, they close the temple gap against side light and wind. Take them off and the same frame is ready for everyday wear.

  • Anti-reflective, on the rear

    Anti-reflective, on the rear

With the sun over your shoulder, that is the difference between a clean view and a ghost image.

  • Hydrophobic

    Hydrophobic

Water beads and runs off rather than sheeting across the lens, so spray and rain clear without a wipe.

  • Oleophobic

    Oleophobic

Sunscreen, bait and fingerprints sit on top of the coating instead of into it, and one wipe takes them off rather than moving them around.

See the difference

The surface stops behaving like a mirror

Light reflecting off the surface of water is organised on a single plane, and that organised light is what an angler experiences as glare.

Reef from the bow, fish visible through the surface The same reef scene washed out by surface glare
GlarePolarised

The water does not get darker. The surface stops behaving like a mirror.
Illustration: the same reef scene with surface glare, and as seen through a polarised lens. Every LXD lens is polarised.

Photochromic

One lens instead of two in the console

A photochromic lens changes tint with the amount of ultraviolet reaching it. Sun out, it darkens. Conditions dim, it lightens.

It suits a session that will not sit still: before light into the middle of the day, out through the heads into open water, under the bimini and then standing on the bow.

Worth knowing
  • Ultraviolet, not brightness. Most windscreens filter UV, so behind glass it will not reach full tint.
  • Cold gives a darker lens and a slower return to clear.
  • Heat does the reverse.

Built for
Rough handling, all-day wear

It deflects under impact instead of breaking, which is why it is the standard in safety eyewear.

Glass is heavier. Glass is more fragile. Glass is optically better. The anglers who choose it have already made that trade and they do not go back.

"Seeing into the water matters more than cutting the light above it."

It depends on where and how you fish:

  • Brown — the best all-rounder. Handles everything from open water to estuary.
  • Green Mirror — great for inshore fishing in medium-light conditions. Excellent contrast and detail.
  • Blue Mirror — built for offshore and deepwater. Cuts glare hard in bright, open-water environments.
  • Gold Mirror — brown base with gold coating. Sharpens detail and contrast across a wide range of conditions.
  • Silver Mirror — green base with silver flash. Enhances visibility through the water surface while maintaining a classic look.
  • Smoke — reduces glare without boosting contrast or colour. Best if you prefer a natural, true-to-life view.
